Vincent Lecavalier beat Capitals’ goalie Michal Neuvirth in overtime to give the Tampa Bay Lightning a 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals. Tampa also has a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference Semi-final series, with the next two games to be played in Tampa Bay on May 3rd and 4th.
The Capitals played a better game than they did in game one, but they were unable to convert the several, quality scoring chances they had against Tampa Bay and their goalie Dwayne Roloson. The Capitals also came up empty on the power play in this game, as they did in game one.
With the Lightning leading 2-1 with a little less than two minutes left in the third period, Capitals head coach Bruce Boudreau decided to pull the goalie for a sixth attacker. The decision paid off, as Alex Ovechkin tipped the puck past Roloson to tie the game at 2-2. Going into overtime, it seemed as if the Capitals had seized momentum but some sloppy play in their defensive zone led to a turnover, the puck on the stick of Tampa Bay captain, Vincent Lecavalier, and the puck past Neuvirth and into the net.
In order for the Capitals to get back into this series, they will have to have a better power play, and get more traffic in front of Roloson.
